For a long time I have been the only women in the room but the good news is that that is changing. More women in digital who have a leading role. I truly believe a company, a team or a group is more interesting and capable if there is diversity. Not only on gender but on every aspact that makes me me and you you. I see it within WeAreBrain where we try to create diverse and inclusive teams, both on the project an the management side. But this article is about women in tech. Still some work to do. SB Commerce – Barbecues, Big Brands, and Building Confidence After a brief stint at Sanoma, which ended due to budget cuts, I found myself at SB Commerce BV, lead by Jorrit Steinz, managing traffic acquisition for some of the Netherlands' fastest-growing brands like vtwonen.nl, alongside gadgethouse.nl and other niche stores. This role came at a pivotal moment in my career, serving as a confidence boost after navigating a turbulent period professionally. On the eCommerce performance side, my mission was clear: optimize paid marketing channels like Google Ads and Meta Ads to drive traffic and revenue. I was determined to maximize online visibility for these brands, ensuring we hit all the right metrics and delivered measurable results. What really added a unique twist to this experience was the team dynamic and culture. SB Commerce had been acquired by Sanoma, a company rooted in publishing, and the eCommerce side was entirely new to them. We had to bridge the gap between editors, marketers, and designers who had built the brand through magazines, TV shows, and an online presence, and the fast-moving eCommerce team, who were all about testing and failing fast. On the team side, I drew from my experience at Springest, introducing tools like Slack and Asana, while embracing GTD methodologies to streamline workflows and improve efficiency. These changes helped the team adapt as SB Commerce transitioned into the Sanoma Home Deco cluster, reducing friction across the board. Balancing performance marketing and team optimization was a two-edged sword — driving results while making internal processes more transparent and functional. One of the biggest lessons learned? Building a marketing calendar isn’t just about offering discounts; it’s about creating themes and product fits that resonate with your audience. We achieved a record-breaking sale of Weber Barbecues, and it wasn’t just luck. It was all about seizing the right moments and positioning products perfectly for the season. (Fun fact: we stocked an insane number of barbecues in the office to be ready for BBQ season. As a Dutchie, we know those BBQ-perfect summer days can be rare! 😅 When the weather cooperated, those BBQ sales were legendary!) These experiences solidified my ability to make an impact, both in driving eCommerce growth and enhancing team collaboration. What’s your secret ingredient for creating a killer team or campaign?

This month, I joined HERMAN MULDER and Herbert Hamers to judge the top Digital Transformation theses from across the Netherlands' business and economics universities: The REmagine award!  What an inspiring experience!  On top of the criteria set by the organization my evaluation focused on three key principles: Bold thinking: Do they have  big impactful ideas? I'm always excited to see students tackle big problems with clear solutions. Responsible: Thinking It Through: It's not just about being bold. Do they consider the downsides? Are they thinking about privacy concerns or ethical implications? Making Connections: Someone recently pointed out that in the Netherlands, we sometimes focus too much on building traffic lights before we have cars. We need both! I'm looking for students who can balance bold ideas with responsible thinking. People need to connect and share their perspectives from both sides. Teamwork makes digital transformation work: Successful Digital Transformation is all about collaboration and breaking down silos. We need people to connect with people, teams to connect with other teams, and companies to partner with each other and with governments. We can't do it alone; we need to build bridges, not walls. Tough Choices: Júlia Puigdomènech's AI solution for border security was impressive in its balance of boldness and responsibility. However, Julian Pemberton Kerssens's innovative use of machine learning for investment strategies ultimately won based on the overall criteria. Bright Futures: In my opinion, both students are winners. They both demonstrate the kind of innovation and thoughtfulness that we need to drive Digital Transformation forward. 🚆🌟 Curious to know what a week in the life of CX Unraveled looks like? This was what my week looked like last week 🌟🚜 I led some inspiring and impactful sessions with some of the coolest brands out there. ✨ Kicking off with an inspiration session for 40 conductors and service employees at Dutch Railways/Nederlandse Spoorwegen, I shared insights on how to excel in customer service. The energy in the room was amazing, and it was great to see so many engaged and motivated participants! 🌱 Next, I inspired the Management Team Netherlands of Eurofins Agro & Horti NL, diving deep into the intricacies of customer experience. I also facilitated their first journey mapping session, setting the stage for ongoing improvements and innovations. 🚜 The week wrapped up with a trip to Groningen and Heerenveen, where I interviewed farmers and had insightful conversations with the Lely center team. These discussions are crucial as we work to enhance the customer journey for Lely International's automated feeding machinery. 🔎 Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in Dutch Tech: Still Room for Growth At Coders Beyond Borders, we are committed to leveraging technology for social good, and a key part of that is ensuring diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are central to the tech ecosystem. However, the latest data from the State of Dutch Tech 2024 Report shows there is still work to be done: 🚩 65% of employees are unable to identify specific DEI actions within their organization. 🚩 45% of respondents from non-Western backgrounds report unequal treatment. 🚩 40% express low confidence in short-term impactful DEI progress in the tech sector. 🚩 35% of employees with diverse migration backgrounds report facing discrimination. Despite evidence showing that organizations embracing DEI are 70% more likely to enter new markets and witness 19% higher innovation revenue, inequality persists. Now, more than ever, it’s critical that companies move beyond lip service and commit to meaningful DEI actions that address these challenges. Very interesting from Prof. dr. Koen Pauwels on the decline of Nike: https://lnkd.in/e4V6uGzB This line stood out to me: "Nike will change its marketing model, centralizing it and making it data driven and digitally led." Partly it stood out because many years ago I had a conversation about doing marketing mix modelling for Nike and was told they weren't interested. I had to respect that - they were right that it simply wouldn't work. Nike's sales base is far too large and its advertising is far too long term focussed and sponsorship-led for MMM to be effective. Nike is an example that I called out on my 'Stages of Marketing Measurement'. Once a brand hits a truly enormous global scale, trying to do granular advertising effectiveness measurement is futile because KPI metrics don't change fast enough for the models to work. All you have left is measuring and optimising for reach.

HOW ABOUT THE QUALITY OF GOODS ON TEMU? In our latest deep-dive report on Tech Buzz China, we shared many new insights about the Chinese webshop Temu. Like many other Chinese webshops, Temu doesn't have a very good reputation as far as product quality goes. I myself have made 15 purchases on Temu, all by actively searching for something I really needed, not by mindlessly browsing. I would say 3 did not meet the standard of supposed usage while 1 other product immediately broke upon usage. For all 4 products, I filed a complaint, did not have to return the goods, and got my money back in 24 hours. This shows the balancing act that Temu is performing regarding price vs. quality vs. customer satisfaction. People tend to compare Temu's quality issues to the problems Wish faced with their drop shipment business model, but Temu's approach is really different. Besides doing its own quality checks before making goods available on the website, it uses a - might a say devious? - scheme. In our report, we elaborate on this. Here's a summary. - Temu is aiming for 'export quality', meaning it requires a certain minimum quality from merchants (which is probably higher than the 'domestic quality' its parent company Pinduoduo would allow in China) - Temu uses a weekly bidding system to get the lowest price from merchants (often manufacturers) that sell the same goods. This significantly drives down prices but can lead to quality issues as manufacturers use low-quality raw materials to maintain healthy margins (e.g. a manufacturer of winter jackets might skimp on the filling of its products) Temu is actually extremely customer-friendly, giving most consumers the benefit of the doubt when they complain. In the case of quality complaints, the merchant has to pay five times the consumer prices as a fine. Considering that the merchant's margins are minimal, this means that they need to sell large quantities of goods to compensate for any single complaint. - Temu does not share detailed reasons for fines with merchants. - The five x consumer price fine is used to refund the consumer (1 x) but Temu pockets the other 4 x. This balancing act tries to ensure the lowest price possible at acceptable quality. But it could seriously backfire if consumers get fed up with receiving shoddy goods and turn their backs on Temu. Time will tell if Temu can find the right balance. Other findings in our report concern the changing product mix that Temu will be able to offer through its semi-managed model (you thought your business was safe, did you?), Temu's road to profitability and lots more. Last Friday I joined the Enterprise UX Event in Amsterdam. It was a great opportunity to learn from and connect with other UX designers within the enterprise context! Some key take aways: • The context and work processes of the end user is key. Otherwise, you might end up solving a specific need, by creating more frustration and increasing the length of the full work process. • Create focus for your end-user by keeping track of all the software applications and dashboards they use and try to reduce it. How many tools do you use during a workday? • Data and insights are crucial within many work processes. However often they are overwhelming and distracting.
